Here I am again, after another month has absolutely rocketed past! It's been a busy one, with trips to Canberra and Melbourne, a hectic assignment schedule and of course, reading way too many articles and speculating on the, now past, federal election.

I do have a few photos from my two trips away though, so for now, I'll share those and cross my fingers that September will ease off a little and give me time to write some posts.

Whenever my sister is involved in anything, you can be sure that you will not have a second of boredom. She loves to plan as many things as possible in even the shortest of time frames. This meant that when my Mum and I travelled up for the weekend we were in for busy time.

It was a great girls weekend with trips to see Phantom of the Opera at Canberra Theatre Centre, a visit to the Turner Exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia and SO much food and wine, I pretty much just rolled all the way back home to Sydney. Oh, and my first trip to Costco... whoa!

The next weekend I headed down to Melbourne with my sister and her partner Mel. Again, I had chosen a freezing place to go in the depths of winter... silly! Although, one of the things I love most about Melbourne IS the gorgeous grey skies. We powered through the cold with trips to St Kilda markets, Brunswick, Richmond and Fitzroy. As always we drank and dined and walked A LOT!

There has been family visits in Sydney, Newcastle and the Southern Highlands, friends leaving for overseas, countless assignments and a persistent cold. Fortunately, the sunny Sydney weather combined with an endless supply of honey and lemon tea has kept me going.
Here are a few of my favourite snaps from July:

It's a bit of a hassle being in the midst of cooking and realising you need just a little more thyme or rosemary to really complete a dish, so this would be a fantastic addition to a cooks kitchen. Let's not forget though, they also look damn pretty and add life and colour into the heart of the home.
Because my kitchen has just the one window, I needed to look for a compact version to give my sumptuous smelling plants a better chance of survival in the light. So I settled on six inch diameter terracotta pots which can easily sit on my windowsill, although I spruced them up through this little DIY here.

In my research I discovered that there are certain varieties of herbs which grow much better than others in an indoor environment. These (thankfully) were just the kind of herbs I always use:

1. Rosemary - For all of you that forget to water plants, then rosemary is your new best friend. It requires little water and is a hardy plant but try and get either Tuscan Blue or Blue Spire as they are smaller and easier to grow indoors. (Although as they grow, chances are they will have to be moved to a larger pot.)

2. Chives - The humble yet delicious chive is a great plant to grow indoors in areas where there is little light. They can survive away from a window and if you continue to chop off the top third, they will keep you in good supply.

3. Thyme - is a much loved plant at my house and I will usually try and add it to everything, or at least as a garnish, because it's just so pretty. However, it will also grow well indoors if you can find a spot for it near some light.

4. Parsley - Parsley is a herb which I'm sure most of us use a lot of, so it is thankful that this little beauty will grow well indoors as it is a pretty hardy plant.

Herbs need a bit of room as they tend to produce fungus so the best way to prevent this is to grow them in terracotta pots at least 6 inches in diameter and provide adequate ventilation at the bottom. I did this by placing decorative pebbles in the bottom of the pot to allow airflow. Also, as some tend to spread more than others, keeping them in different pots is the best way to give all of them a chance at survival.

To keep them at their best, clip them back a little every now and again and occasionally fertilise them by adding one teaspoon of fish emulsion to a small watering can. You should always water them at the base of the plant, not over the leaves and don't overwater, every two or three days should be adequate.

Do you have any tips for growing plants/herbs indoors? I'd love to hear of ways you incorporated live herbs in your kitchen!
The inspiration for cushion searching came from having just purchased my first linen bedspread by Home Republic, from Adairs. This pillow will make a joyous accent to my sleeping space. As we are in the depths of the Winter rains here in Sydney, I needed a little brightening to make the days a little less grey. Crisp whites with a touch of happy yellow shall be my sanctuary from the clouds outside.

I also purchased this sweet as pie owl, from Adairs, to sit by me at night. Maybe he will impart some of his wisdom my way... but even if he doesn't, he's still a joy to look at.

I have been very into indoor plants lately, so I was on the look out for some pots that could do with a bit of a makeover.

As I am on a budget, I settled on four 6" diameter terracotta pots, to use as a blank canvas, a can of Dulux Spraypak Quick Dry in Flat White, to quickly and easily do a base coat, and a small bag of white stones.

While there I decided I would use these for a little windowsill herb garden so ducked out into the rain to grab some rosemary, chives, parsley and thyme.

Back home I went, armed with my little bag of goodies. The next few hours were a process of trial and error as I had a serious problem making a decision on which pattern I wanted to use. I settled on a simple, geometric design with subtle greys and pops of colour in yellow and orange.

Here are the steps I used to create the pots:

1. To begin with, I sprayed the pots (making sure to use gloves and a plastic drop sheet, the spray can go everywhere when you're doing it on a windy balcony!) and left them to dry.

2. I then chose my design to paint over the white base, I did this with some small pots of enamel paint I had laying around. Head down to your local hardware store and they will have a large range to choose from.

3. The easiest and most striking way to create a modern design involving blocking colours, is with two diagonal pieces of sticky tape stuck on the pot and then paint between the bits of tape, being sure to paint the lip and the top of the inside of the pot too.

4. Pull the sticky tape off, leave to dry and voila! THAT'S IT!!

This whole process, including potting the herbs took less than a day and all together (plants as well) cost me under $30. This is great value considering I spent $15 last week on pre-packaged herbs from the store!

The slow cooking movement has been a HUGE aspect of this and as such I am constantly salivating over the wonderful recipes my fellow bloggers are posting. I was lucky enough to get a small slow cooker, that I had been lusting after, for my birthday this year and was eager to test it out on a lovely lamb recipe.

Enter a 12 hour ragu...

12hr Lamb and Rosemary Ragu

Ingredients:

1.25 kg lamb shoulder (deboned)
4 truss tomatoes
1 can of diced tomatoes
1 garlic clove
1 1/2 celery stalks
2 rosemary fronds
4 thyme fronds
2 dried bay leaves
2 cups of red wine (I recommend shiraz for its wholesome flavour)
1 cup of chicken or vegetable stock
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 packet of parppadelle pasta
2 tablespoons of butter
basil and parmesan cheese to garnish

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 140 degrees celsius or if using a slow cooker, put on high to warm up.
2. Dice lamb shoulder, being sure to remove most of the white, fatty bits.
3. In a pan with olive oil, sear the lamb until a very light brown. Add to slow cooker or large crock pot.
4. Finely chop rosemary, thyme, garlic and celery and then saute for a minute in the same pan.
5. Add red wine to pan and reduce the mixture by about a third, then pour in stock and heat. Add this mixture to the slow cooker or crock pot.
6. Dice up the truss tomatoes and add to pot with canned tomatoes and bay leaves.
7. Give a quick stir and put in just one tablespoon of butter and a generous amount of pepper and salt then leave for one hour.
8. Return to crock pot, give a stir and turn slow cooker to low or oven to 120 degrees celsius.
9. Leave for a further 11 hours checking intermittently.
10. Either at the end or around the 8 hour mark, whisk around the whole mixture to break apart the meat, this gives it that pulled thick meat look.
11. Boil up some parppadelle pasta then mix the ragu sauce and remaining butter in with the pasta.

Serve hot, topped with basil leaves and a generous amount of parmesan. Enjoy with a good red wine and some dark chocolate for desert. This recipe can also be frozen in batches to enjoy later.

If your sauce is at any point looking a bit too watery you can add in one tablespoon of flour to thicken the sauce. It works a treat!

While this dish does take a long time (hello, twelve hours) it actually doesn't take much effort. You can be doing anything, including leaving the house in the time that it is cooking. Checking it often isn't required unless you're like me and love to just stir it and get a whiff of the delicious aroma!

I hope you enjoy the dish! Do you have any tasty, wholesome meals I should be trying in my slow cooker? I'd love to know!
One of my favourites, that I whip up and freeze in batches, is my Easy Chicken and Vegetable Soup.

It's so simple to make and is perfect to reheat with some crusty bread on a night when you can't be bothered to cook. It's also a great way to get your vegetable fix in; fantastic for the immune system! There are a few cheats in the preparation stages to make it really easy, so all of you cooking purists, look away now!

Easy Chicken and Vegetable Soup
(6-8 serves)

Ingredients:

3 carrots
2 large zucchinis
2 small potatoes
1 large handful of green beans
1 small capsicum
1 small (or 1/2 large) onion
1 clove of garlic
2 litres of water
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 whole roast chicken, shredded (this the cheating bit)
1 1/2 packets of Continental Chicken Noodle Simmer Soup (this is the REALLY cheating bit)

Method:

1. Dice carrots, zucchini, potato, green beans and capsicum then set aside in a large bowl.
2. Finely chop garlic and onion and saute until soft in a tablespoon of olive oil.
3. Add all of the diced vegetables and stir together to sweat for about 2 minutes.
4. Add one litre of water and Chicken Noodle Simmer Soup. Bring to boil.
5. Turn down to simmer and add torn chicken and another litre of water.
6. Add second packet of Chicken Noodle Soup, turn to simmer.
7. Simmer for about 1-2 hours, adding hot water to create desired amount of broth.
8. Serve hot with crusty buttered bread, or ladle into portions and cool to freeze.

I choose to add in a little crushed chilli when adding the Chicken Noodle Mix just for a tiny kick, but this is dependent on tastes, it's also great without it!

And that's it, tastes absolutely delicious and very convenient for those of you who lead busy lives! Do you have any delicious meals I should try? What's your go-to winter warmer dish?

It was a packed out day showcasing some of Australia's best up-and-coming brands and designers; I found myself a bit in awe of the creative little people we've got on our fair shores.

Afterwards, (not having been able to spend as much time there as I would have liked) I jumped on The Finders Keepers website to check out some of the things I may have missed. It was there I came across these little hanging planter gems from Melbourne design duo Angus & Celeste!

Will you have a look at these fine things, I am particularly coveting the 'Billy Buttons' design for a hint of happy yellow! -

Despite having been to Thailand before, I am always flawed by the simple beauty of places throughout Asia. The way the people in markets and the men fishing create images worthy of hung photographs just by... being.

I was lucky enough to travel through Vietnam alone and found such joy every morning just sitting with an iced tea near the water, on chairs that threatened to fold over with one wrong move. The boats would pull in with hundreds of passegers and their bikes. The day would begin with organised commotion and colour. It was bliss being a witness to it all.

Very soon I will be doing a post about the art and items I picked up from Vietnam, and how I used them to jazz up my apartment, so stay tuned.

Is there anywhere or any moment in Vietnam that reminds you of these simple little pleasures? I'd love to hear your stories!

May - The Story:

My middle name is May, but that is not the beginning. My Nana was called May by everyone who knew her. Her real name was Mary but she didn't much care for that and so until the day she passed away, even in hospitals and nursing homes, the first order of business was ensuring all things name-like were changed to May.

Nothing else was acceptable, so May it was.

Then one day, on the 2nd of May, a little girl was born. Her parents called her Sarah May, after her strong willed Nana. And she was a May, through and through. Insistent, uncompromising and stubbornly Scottish. Yet she was born in a little town, on a farm, in New South Wales, Australia.

She loved that her middle name was May and that she was born in May.

Emerald - The Story:

This little girl, Sarah May, had green eyes, with yellow in them, but she liked to think they looked the colour of Emerald, especially when it rained.

Now Emerald was the colour of her birthstone and her favourite colour to boot. She would drape herself in Emerald velvet (much like George off Seinfeld) if she wouldn't be looked at quizzically everywhere she went.

Emerald is also 2013's colour (or so says Pantone) and that's the year this little blog came about.

So there is my Emerald and May, all wrapped up. I hope you'll join me on my adventures. Sarah x
I barely even noticed it arriving until I was walking on a blustery morning and all around me was orange, maroon and every shade of yellow this side of the (disappearing) sun.

I always find Autumn is the perfect time to 'nest' your home. It creates comfort, warmth and a respite from the increasing chill in the air and the winds that threaten to blow your hair into directions and styles only super glue could usually achieve.

At times like this I search for soft and abundant textures in rugs, pillows and throws; they add a cosiness to the everyday. It certainly helps that this is also preparation for the winter sneaking up just around the corner.

While traditionally the notion of these lovely, warm additions to the home are token creams, beiges and greys, this need not be the case. Geometric and jacquard designs using fluoros and bold hues still remain very much in vogue. As such there are numerous options when it comes to choosing soft furnishings that modernise and update the look of your home without making it seem... snow lodge (not that I have anything against a good snow lodge).

Check out some of these stunning throws and cushions that you can snuggle with in style:
When it comes to gorgeous cushions who can really go past Bonnie and Neil for a splash of colour, a textured print or just for a love of our national flora and fauna. The new range features vibrant designs in all shades. I'm lusting after these red and orange pillows above, for their hint of changing-leaf colour and their delightful fringing on the edges. But there are so many more, head over to Bonnie and Neil here to see for yourself.

Who can go past Pendleton for a classic throw rug... but wait a sec, they've seriously updated their look with the new range that's out now. If you live in an inner city studio apartment, chances are you are facing a constant battle to achieve more space, or at least, the illusion of more space. With years worth of furniture, memories and bits and bobs collected from around the globe, this task is not an easy feat.

Stephen Nicholls, property editor at smh.com.au, has noted the exponential growth and popularity of apartments, especially studios, as both investments and rentals. With this in mind, there is a need for intuitive thinking and classic design tricks to turn your little spot of heaven into something that resembles… well, a much larger spot of heaven. Below are six tricks to turn your crowded abode into a calming respite.

1. Let in the light! The curse of a studio can often be the limit of natural light. To step out of the darkness, apply blinds or curtains that have minimal blockage when they are open.

2. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. A tried and tested home decor trick to create more space is the addition of mirrors to accentuate and elongate any room. However, many get the scale wrong. The trick is to add in large, simple and expansive mirrors, rather than small and dainty ones that can often achieve the opposite affect.

3. Possession Purge! Be honest with yourself and throw out any unnecessary items or space stealing (but largely non-functional) furniture. A good tip is the One Year Test. If you haven’t used the item in over a year, chuck it. Come on, do you really need those lecture notebooks from your SCLG101 class 7 years ago?

4. Organise and Order. Find a place for EVERYTHING, and I mean every last safety pin and half empty hair spray bottle. When living in a small place, clutter and confusion results from items not having anywhere to ‘go back’ to. Ikea is renown for its space saving organisational designs. Measure your place up and go and grab some.

5. Industrial design has been going strong
for a few years now, with harsh minimalist features it focuses on what’s not

Many people think that interior design is
a topic that only a select group of people can afford or relate to. This may
have something to do with the idea of it being a luxury, especially when you
see many of the publicized aspects of the industry.

We all know the way interior design is
portrayed in the media. Three hundred dollar cushions, one of a kind pieces
flown in from far away places and costly hiring of polished and uppity
designers who have endless budgets.

While these aspects are of course alive and
well, there are many more interesting and important factors in interior design
affecting a large proportion of the world. Maybe without them even knowing.

From basic utensils or furniture we use in
our house, to the ways in which our surroundings affect our moods and
productivity. Interiors are an important part of life for people on all areas
of the economic spectrum.

The growth in recent years of DIY and a
resurgence of socializing in the home has brought interior design into a wide
and varied audience as an industry that is available to everyone.

Yet there are aspects of interior design
that are more than aesthetics and creating social spaces. The field also plays
a role in moods and actions of people. Everyone from sociologists to
psychologists’ to childcare workers use tools of interior and design to affect
the way people act, interact and feel.

Most well known for its ability to alter
people’s mood is colour therapy in interiors. Studies have tied strong links to
colour particularly in ways to relax or energise individuals through use of
bright or even subtle room dressings.

The use of space and furnishings in public
and commercial interiors and designs can also be a powerful way to impact
peoples movement and interactions with others. Creating spaces that control the
flow of crowds in particular are put to use in areas like galleries and
shopping centers.

With all of these aspects, it is easy to
see why interior design has such an impact on our day to day lives. But we
can’t also discount the fact that it’s a nice way to make things pretty!

colours and the ways in which they can affect our moods and habits -

travel and as such, I draw much of my inspiration from worldly design and far

much aided by the memories of my travels and the sights, colours and textures

unrequited love of furniture, interiors and design probably stems from my Dad,
a devoted antiques dealer. From the age of 5, I could spout off names of all

interiors caper has been a natural progression.

While interiors can be a broad topic in
and of itself, design fits snugly in there as well. In the last few years I

the home experience streamlined, cohesive and damn good looking!

When all worry and stress eases for a bit and you can breathe and be yourself.

After getting home from work, glass of wine poured, I started on what will now be known as 'The Soup to End All Problems', a hearty mixture of vegetables, lentils and chicken. Then with a knock on the door my sister was here.

Due to us living in different cities, we only get to see each other about once every three months. Also, due to my terribly hopeless phone communication we don't get to talk as much as we should. When we do it's usually the result of one of us having a neurotic breakdown about something or alternatively, the innocent, "So, I kind of need you to transfer me some money...?" conversation.

Despite Kathleen being three years older than me, we share the advice and leadership sibling role equally. Both of us are good at being there if the other one needs a sounding board or a truthful and harsh reality check.

However, the one thing we are superb at is falling into lengthy conversations about absolutely nothing. With each of us being the person who has seen and heard more about the others life than everyone else combined, the result is an honest, embarrassing and in depth voicing of concerns or thoughts that we would NEVER say to another person.

And so it was with ease last night that we fell into a comfortable, no holds barred discussion about family, work, love lives, study, mortifying moments, genetic traits and those funny little things you think but should usually stay in your head.

We sat on the couch scoffing down our wine and soup, bursting into hysterical laughter and every now and again putting on the, 'ok, I'm going to give you some real life advice right now' tone.

What a warm and fuzzy feeling.

This morning I realised how incredibly lucky it is that I have someone who has seen the worst of me, the best of me and everything in between. Lucky, that despite it is sometimes tough, this person loves me unconditionally, without judgement or expectation.

So, to my sister Kathleen who shares my crazy neurotic mindset, my inappropriate humour and my genetic disadvantages - I think you're absolutely hilarious, absolutely insane and absolutely have a knack for driving me to a point of exasperation, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Sarah Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17575287042538842652noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277729746535490517.post-79916676061496608762012-05-14T02:35:00.000+10:002013-09-08T15:50:01.651+10:00Moments Not MilestonesLast week was my birthday.

Another year past, but it's still just the beginning. Sometimes it's hard to remember that and the pressure of time frames and schedules can be overwhelming.

Like Christmas, like New Years, like all the milestones we place in our lives as gauges of how and where and why we are in certain situations, a birthday is up there with the mother of all milestones.

On a birthday we tend to lose sight of the big picture and it becomes all about us. We put a magnifying glass on our highs, lows and our 'did I actually fucking do that's'. This usually (with a few drinks involved) results in the conclusion that things just aren't going the way we had anticipated they would when we did this exact same exercise 12 months ago. It is because of this we can all relate to the lyrics "It's my birthday and I'll cry if I want to..." sad, but as a witness to myself and friends, true.

This year was different though.

Sure I cried about things, sure I was completely inappropriately drunk on a Wednesday, sure I woke up with mild regret (may or may not have been to do with attempting the Dirty Dancing lift in a short dress in a small bar, ahem) but I also woke up happy... at 4pm the next day.

On my birthday I was surrounded by my friends, I spoke to everyone I truly loved and I was in a better place than I had anticipated I would be 12 months ago.

Each year we lay claim that this will be our best for any number of reasons. Everything will be just hunky dory and nothing will get in our way. The last year has shown me that downfalls, loss and troubles are all a part of the intricate web that's weaved in our life.. and here's the kicker, these shit things do somehow make things better in the long run... who woulda' thought?

I'm making no grand statements about this being the best year, the chips can fall where they may. They will regardless of what I declare. I'm realising that's how life has to be, how it should be.

So, I will see where the wind and the world take me this year, to ensure that life isn't a matter of milestones but moments instead. I'm done with the pressure of expectations, from others, but mostly from myself. So it's time to enjoy and do the little things that make me happy, if that means doing revealing dance lifts in a bar, so be it, I was beyond joy.

This week I took an afternoon to lay in the sun by the water in my favourite place I have ever been. I took pictures because I like taking pictures, I patted all the dogs that were running past because they were god damn cute and I chatted and laughed with the people who would walk to the end of the jetty to see if the girl laying motionless there was alive or not. The happiness was like nothing I had felt for a while.

Also two things happened today that just made me want to smile and squeeze people's faces with joy:

Firstly, I watched a scary looking biker pull up at a red light beside a car that had a little kid marveling at him in the back. He high fived the little boy, chatted to him about his matchbox car, passed him a finger skateboard out of his pocket and then roared off while the boy was in hysterical laughter. Sweet.

Secondly, there was a man of about 70 years completely in his own world as he danced by himself to the sound of the buskers in Pitt St Mall. He just kept going and was still there when I left.

Yep, despite the downs, I think there's hope for us all yet...

It's 5pm the day before an essay/article/work report is due, with all the sincerity in the world you sit down at your computer ready to punch out a truly remarkable piece of work, one that Tolstoy would surely claim as his own.

Fast forward to three hours later...

You have managed to update your Twitter status seven times, do an in depth stalk of three old high school crushes, watch an episode of 30 rock, pin artsy pictures on Pinterest and update your profile on LinkedIn.

If you are a social media marketing manager, job well done.

If you are the rest of the world, chances are the work you have actually completed consists of a heading, a blank page and a blinking cursor anticipating something to be typed on a Word document.

I'm sure it took Tolstoy at least a few hours to come up with the title War and Peace, but if your headline consists of 'GOVT3236 - Analytical Essay' I don't think you can claim the time frame as deliberation on the English language.

It is times like this I manage to astound myself with the lengths I will go to NOT to do something. Usually this requires double the effort of the original task, but does my brain realise the absolute ridiculousness of the situation? Of course not, otherwise I would not be writing this blog post, (yes, I have an essay due tomorrow).

The most alarming of these moments was a week ago when I found myself in the unusual position of sitting in my completely spotless apartment, three loads of washing done, books rearranged, uni notes filed and despairingly, I was completely at a loss of distractions.

So what did I do? I Googled ways to not procrastinate. For two hours.

I had sunk to a new low and something needed to be done.

Luckily for me, I had searched ways to not procrastinate (great work, Sarah), so I had come across some cool applications that <strike>might</strike> would help me, now that I was to become an efficient and productive wiz-kid.

First thing was first, climbing out of the social media black hole just for a few hours. But how?

Anti-Social - is a downloadable productivity app which allows you to type in the domain names of sites that stop you from doing what you need to do. You simply type in the domains and then select the time frame you want to be blocked from them. If, in the event of a social media emergency, you need to gain access to these sites before time is up you can reboot your computer. You get five free trials of this and then if it works for you, download it for $15.

Freedom - is Anti-Social's little sister and goes one step further. Under the same premise of time frames it instead blocks you from accessing anything on the internet and is available for download for $10.

For those wanting both of these apps, you can bundle and buy the two for a reduced price of $20. The downside is that Anti-Social is not available on PC's, only Mac's. I guess this is because all the hip "I'm a converse wearing, satchel carrying, Mac" types are more addicted to social media than PC users, maybe...

If you are really in a time crunch the next application lays it on the line right from the get go.

Write or Die - 'Putting the prod in productivity', because who doesn't like a bit of sadistic behaviour from a computer app? No one and that is what you'll get. The premise of this is that you have to keep typing or there will be consequences. Ranging from unpleasant sounds, to your work actually starting to delete itself, it's just best if you keep typing. You can download it from Itunes for $10.

I have yet employ these in my work because obviously I had to write this blog to help everyone out. I'm pretty selfless like that, it's nothing to do with me STILL avoiding work.

Anyway, time to get on with my version of War and Peace. If I copy and paste the essay question at the top of the page, that's at least four more lines... brilliant.Sarah Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17575287042538842652noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277729746535490517.post-55586628674555849082012-03-15T22:00:00.000+11:002013-09-08T15:52:15.188+10:00People in Glass HousesThis year in my quest to do it all, I was on the hunt for volunteer or internship work at an NGO. Not only am I really quite obsessed with human rights and equality, but I also study International Relations and Social Policy, so this kind of work would certainly complement my studies.

In my search I came across a position to do communications on a locally run campaign by the international development organisation, Oxfam. The position was to work on 'Close the Gap', an initiative which aims to close the life expectancy gap, of almost 20 years, between Indigenous Australians and the wider community in one generation. It also aims to close the gap in mortality rates of Indigenous children under five years old, who die at more than twice the rate of other Australian babies.

These are staggering figures when we consider that we live in a democratic, first world nation with health and welfare benefits. One would expect these figures in a developing country but in Australia... surely not?

I have always been a huge advocate of international aid and development and fully thrown my support behind refugee rights, women's empowerment and grassroots development of the earth's poorest nations. Admittedly, I never looked in my own backyard. If I had, I would have seen the violation of numerous human rights, from land ownership to health.

I had always naively assumed that in a country full of people so quick to judge and condemn other countries on questionable actions toward their citizens that we should be pretty free from human rights violations ourselves.

How wrong I had been.

I now look around the world at all the first world countries who pride themselves on having achieved a 'civilised' democratic state and see the ways in which they deny or ignore Articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). Also on how they condemn other nations on the very rights they also violate.

What is an example, you ask?

I will state the most hypocritical and most obvious due to the countries position in the international arena. In Article 3 of the Declaration it states "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person," I do believe this loosely translate as DON'T KILL PEOPLE! Now let's think who breaks this... oh yeah the United States. I should clarify here I'm talking about the death penalty still legal in many states, not the humanitarian/military intervention in the Middle East, although that arguably breaks a whole other set of international laws.

That is just one example, although there are hundreds, indeed reading through the first ten articles one can immediately jump to numerous examples of how many times the US has violated these rights since 9/11 in 2001 using 'freedom' as their motive.

However, that is a whole other blog post.

So I did get the gig at Oxfam and have now been working on the campaign for a few weeks. In these few weeks I have really understood the power of beginning any kind of aid work in our own backyard. It provides context and nuance in understanding that people of any minority, in any country are quite possibly struggling an uphill battle of equal rights to basic living provisions.

It is important to recognise that because we believe ourselves to be in a better situation than many other nations around the world, this may not be the case for all of our citizens.
Everyone has sat firmly on one of two sides; either promoting or condemning the video that was released and the charity behind it, 'Invisible Children'.

Quite literally hundreds of thousands of blog posts, news articles, radio and television shows, not to mention dinner conversations, have centred around Kony 2012, Uganda and the LRA. In multiple cases discussions were heated and intense. Innocent people unknowingly walked into a minefield by simply muttering the statement, "So what do you think about Kony2012?"

So here I will state the obvious - The campaign worked.

This campaign whether ill-informed, simplistic, or idealistic and with an apparently questionable fund dispersion system, reached tens of millions of people within days. Out of every campaign ever created this has without doubt been the most successful in the short term, particularly through the platform of social media.

Whether you agree or disagree on the issue at hand you cannot dispute the extreme reach of this remarkable social media marketing strategy. It will be interesting to see the effects this campaign has on marketing and social media campaigning from here on out.

So what's my opinion on Kony 2012? Well.... you walked right into that one didn't you!

While I do not necessarily condone the 'fundraising' aspect of the campaign as I don't much care for financial aid for military (especially of groups like the Ugandan Army who are constant violators of human rights) I do see a positive side to the campaign in its success of raising awareness.

I can see all of you nay-sayers raring up at that one with comments like "What, you mean people blindly following the new big fad?" and "They will forget about it in a week, how is that awareness!"

While I agree that both of these are valid arguments and have proven to be partly true over the last week, with people backtracking on opinions and already moving onto the next big thing, I still believe the awareness the campaign created will be beneficial.

In an online (of course) debate I had with a friend of mine, my reasoning for this was that for every 10 million people who blindly followed the campaign, there were perhaps 1000 who did further and extended research on Kony and the LRA. Maybe of these thousand, 100 people then researched the best method for getting involved in a grassroots movement to either minimise or prevent further events like this from happening. And maybe 20 of these people will continue in an effort to learn, raise awareness or help implement more appropriate prevention strategies in their lifetime.

As I write this there has been over 70 million hits on the video - if I work with my numbers above that is 140 people (I hope, I'm terrible at maths) who could possibly work towards beneficial solutions to prevent violations of human rights.

Isn't that an achievement? I think it is. It is also why I maintain my position that the Kony2012 campaign is a positive thing.

But here is the thing, don't just take my word for it. Be one of the 1000 who research further. Here are two great articles I have found, one from each side of the fence.

Some articles disagreeing with the campaign can be seen at:

- 'Unmuted - You Don't Have My Vote'

- 'Visible Children - We Got Trouble'

Some articles agreeing that the campaign has positives can be seen at:

- 'At Water's Edge - Can the United Nations Harness Kony2012's Energy?'

- 'Congo Siasa - From Campaigning to Action on Joseph Kony and the LRA'

Also to watch continued debates from both sides Al Jazeera has a spotlight on Kony - 'Al Jazeera - Spotlight: Kony'

I willingly admit that my opinion, is just that. This issue is vastly more complex than watching a 30 minute video. It would take years to understand, to any extent, the gravity of Uganda's political and social history and why things are the way they are. Yet, as I referenced earlier, it could be a start for some people.Sarah Morrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17575287042538842652noreply@blogger.com0
